Reason for the blemish: These anvils have an unhardened spot right in the middle of the face. With the alloy we used, the effected area should work harden with use. The rest of the face is around 48-52 HRC. We have tested these anvils and they still hit very hard and are very serviceable.

The Atlas Anvil is specifically engineered for bladesmiths.
This anvil is raw, unpainted steel. Leave it outdoors and it will rust, developing a nice patina.
Your new anvil will require proper dressing with a flap wheel. This is standard for new anvils of all brands.
